about
Marie Conniffe returns with a musical call-to-arms to enjoy the summer months and make the most out of life. Her latest song “Down to the River to Play” is a 90s-infused anthem brimming with positivity and good vibes. In the title of the song, a nod to the harmonic influences of the “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” soundtrack in her own musical life, Conniffe invites us to go “down to the river to play in the hay”. It’s a catchy, fun-filled number that is well-served by the hypnotic blend of Conniffe’s vocal harmonies and uplifting message.
The song was recorded at Beardfire Music in Dublin 4 with brothers, Rohan Healy and Al Quiff, and their dad, David Virgin.
lyrics
We’ll go
Down to the river to play in the hay
Yeah, now that it’s the summer,
We can play every day
And we’ll build a fire in the night
Because the sun needs to sleep
And we have songs to swop and to keep
We have songs to swop
And I remember a time
When you would sing from your heart
And you mesmerised the crowd
Who couldn’t tell you apart
From the name that you loved
Before you found you were wrong
Oh but, you know, we’re all just trying to get along
We’re all just trying to get
Down to the river to play in the hay
Yeah, now that it’s the summer,
We can play every day
And we’ll build a fire in the night
Because the sun needs to sleep
And we have songs to swop and to keep
We have songs to swop
And I remember a time
When we had climbed to the top
And, the crowd, they had cheered,
There was no way we could stop
And then we ran down the mountain
Because it’s fast and it’s free
Ah, you know, you know you are the devil in me
But we’ll still go
Down to the river to play in the hay
Yeah, now that it’s the summer,
We can play every day
And we’ll build a fire in the night
Because the sun needs to sleep
And we have songs to swop and to keep
We have songs to swop
And I remember a time
When we would break all the rules
Pass the hours with the games
We used to play after school
And I’m always the loser
But I still like playing pool
I am your truth-telling fool
But we’ll still go
Yeah we’ll still go
Oh we’ll all go
Down to the river to play in the hay
Yeah, now that it’s the summer,
We can play every day
And we’ll build a fire in the night
Because the sun needs to sleep
And we have songs to swop and to keep
We have songs to send us to sleep
And there won’t be a peep

Ah, she's just brilliant - lovely voice, beautiful lyrics and a really nice style of playing. A little melancholy at times, but really relaxing too. And she's one of my favourite people in the world! Marie Conniffe
A really interesting artist and songwriter, Bridget Martin has a unique voice and performs here with a fantastic bunch of musicians, who possibly have the best band-name ever! Marie Conniffe
